Biography

As a specialist in insolvency, business recovery and turnaround for both corporate and private individuals, Jan also handles solvent liquidations, commercial dispute resolution and litigation.

Jan is Chair of the Chester Business Club and a member of the Institute of Directors.  She served for 9 years as non-executive Director of Muir Group Housing Association Ltd and member of its Group Audit & Risk Committee.

Jan has a determined and focused approach to all her work, which is much valued by her clients.

Having worked for several years before qualifying as a solicitor, including a period as a manager at a limited company under administrative receivership, her first-hand business experience gives her a valuable insight to clients’ problems.

Dealing with insolvency office holders, the Court or the Insolvency Service can be very stressful, and Jan works hard to smooth the path towards a satisfactory outcome in matters such as IVAs, MBOs, asset purchases, director disqualification proceedings or bankruptcy annulment. She provides clear and reliable advice on options available before and after formal insolvency proceedings. She also assists those affected by the bankruptcy of their spouse.

Jan advises about a wide range of issues such as antecedent transaction claims and possession proceedings.

Jan’s pre-qualification experience includes five years at a cross-media publishing company in London, handling commercial work such as licence and production agreements for video, music and spoken word. She formerly worked at a manufacturing company in Cornwall and at an outdoor pursuits centre in mid-Wales.

She qualified with Distinction at the University of Law, Chester. Jan also has an Honours degree in International Business after study in the Netherlands and at Plymouth University.

Janette Louise Chillery-Belcher is regulated as an insolvency practitioner by the ICAEW in the UK. Jan is also a member of R3, the Association of Business Recovery Professionals.

Since 2001 she has been Secretary of Chester Regatta, the oldest regatta in the world.

Jan enjoys horse-riding, walking the dog, Monty Python and Terry Pratchett.

I’d had a statutory demand issued against me and so I needed a solicitor who dealt with them.  My partner found  Aaron & Partners details via Google, when we called we got put through to Jan. We did speak to another solicitor somewhere else too but Jan sounded more professional.  Right from the beginning Jan came across as professional and knowledgeable and put me on the right track.  She advised that we could go down the track of having the demand set aside by the court but recommended before we got into that cost that we could start with sending a letter. She said I could write it or she could write it on my behalf, I asked her to do it and she sent it for me to agree.  She forwarded the letter to the other solicitor on the Friday and by Tuesday we’d had a response from them saying they wouldn’t pursue it any further. The whole thing cost me £500 but it could’ve ended up costing me £14,500 – so that’s great – all that stress she just put to bed.  Jan was really nice to work with throughout - in the nicest possible way, I wouldn’t like to get on the wrong side of her!  If I ever found myself in a similar situation I wouldn’t hesitate to give her a call.

I found myself in a difficult situation following a personal guarantee I made. I received a statutory demand for a sum of money and I probably should have got professional advice straight away, but I tried to deal with it on my own. I applied to Court to set aside the statutory demand, but this failed, and I got a CJJ against me for the costs. The creditor then petitioned for my bankruptcy.  I googled for a Chester-based solicitor and found Jan Chillery at Aaron & Partners. Jan was excellent, very positive and direct with no pussyfooting around, and telling me exactly her thoughts on where I stood which I really appreciated.  Jan suggested a couple of alternative routes to me, including a possible IVA. With her help, in the end, I negotiated a settlement with the creditor and got the bankruptcy petition withdrawn.  Jan made sure the Court was told the earlier CCJ was satisfied, so I can get my credit rating back on track. My experience with Aaron & Partners has been excellent, and I’d definitely point anybody in a similar situation in your direction.

I recently sought legal assistance for an extremely time critical situation. Due to prior circumstances, I needed a solicitor to help transact a deal during liquidation. Based on a recommendation to use Aaron & Partners, I enquired online and was met with a prompt response from Jan Chillery, who assisted me with this time sensitive matter. My initial impressions of Aaron & Partners and Jan were very positive, and I felt the speed and promptness of response to my questions was excellent. She was professional throughout the entire process and demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills. She balanced the clear comprehensive knowledge of the situation at hand with a great personal and friendly approach.
