Biography
Hugh is a corporate finance partner, advising on buying and selling companies (often with a cross-border element), financing businesses (both debt and equity), joint venture/shareholder agreements, share option schemes, group re-organisations and general company law. He leads much of the firm’s banking and finance work and acts for a number of Banks and financial institutions/investors, as well as assisting borrowers with their loan facility and security documents and on receiving investments.
Hugh is also head of our rapidly growing Shrewsbury office, and responsible for our trainee solicitors across the whole firm.
Hugh grew up on the Shropshire/Cheshire border, and served with the Shropshire & Staffordshire Yeomanry TA. After studying engineering at Exeter University, Hugh began his law career with several periods of work experience with Aaron & Partners. He studied law at Staffordshire University, and then spent many years as a partner in a large national firm in the East Midlands.
Hereditary deafness runs through the family – Hugh is partially deaf in both ears and is a long-term wearer of hearing aids, as is one of his daughters. Hugh has been very involved in support and fund-raising for the main UK charity for the deaf, RNID. Given his deafness, Hugh prefers advising his clients face to face or via Teams, rather than telephone.
Hugh is a trustee and Chairman of the Community Resource (a charity helping mitigate the effects of rural isolation and rural poverty across Shropshire) and also a Trustee of the Shropshire Youth Support Trust (a charity supporting young people into the world of self-employment and business).
